This month marks a major milestone: WaterRoofs is moving beyond design and testing into real-world implementation. Our first pilot project is now underway;  bringing recycled‑PET, evaporative rooftop systems to life in an urban environment.

📍 Why a Pilot Project Matters Now

With record-breaking heatwaves this summer destabilizing infrastructure across Europe, real-world validation of climate technologies has never been more urgent. Simulations and lab trials tell one story;  but performance on actual rooftops under stress conditions confirms usability, resilience, and impact.

Pilot projects;  from Amsterdam’s SmartRoof to Paris’s Académie du Climat;  have already demonstrated the power of green and evaporative roofing to lower surface temps by 10–17 °C, increase humidity, and retain rainfall. With WaterRoofs, we’re bringing our innovation into that growing field.

🧩 About the WaterRoofs Pilot

Location: [City name redacted;  pilot in collaboration with local municipality/architecture firm] Roof area: [Project scope, e.g., 150 m²] Objectives:

  1. Validate evaporative cooling performance in real summer conditions

  2. Test long‑term rainwater retention and evaporation patterns

  3. Gather data on microclimate impact;  surface and ambient temps, humidity, structural load

Our goal is simple: show how lightweight, modular, PET‑based WaterRoofs tiles behave when exposed to the environment;  to measure temperature reductions, water cycle restoration, and user comfort.

🔬 What We’re Monitoring

  • Temperature sensors across the pilot rooftop, indoors, and at street level

  • Humidity sensors to track localized atmospheric moisture

  • Water balance metrics using capillary tube readings and retention arrays

  • Structural assessments for stress, UV exposure, and material integrity

  • User & occupant feedback for perceived comfort and livability

These data points align with established blue‑green roof studies in Paris and Amsterdam, which recorded 40 L/m² of evaporation over two-week heatwaves and biodiversity increases.

🧱 Why WaterRoofs Stands Out

  1. Modular & lightweight – easy to retrofit without reinforcing rooftops

  2. Recycled PET – closes a plastic loop while enabling environmental function

  3. Remote monitoring – integrates IoT for smart evaporation management

  4. Scalable design – from single homes to apartment blocks

  5. Climatic alignment – inspired by large canopy forest evaporation rates

No heavy soil substrate. No irrigation systems. No invasive construction.

Just a clean, simple system that returns water to the sky;  one tile at a time.

🌡️ Early Insights (Preliminary)

Two weeks into the pilot, our early findings are promising:

  • Surface temp drops of 8–10 °C under direct sunlight

  • Ambient cooling of 1–2 °C at rooftop height in late afternoon

  • Steady evaporation even during 40 °C days, indicating reservoir efficiency

  • Positive occupant feedback on both thermal comfort and visual aesthetics

These trends track closely with other urban pilots;  Roofscapes in Paris showed 10 °C cooler surfaces on a zinc roof, while Amsterdam’s SmartRoof reported 42 L/m² evaporation over two weeks.

🌍 What's Next

Over the next two months we’ll:

  • Expand sensor deployment to street level for neighborhood impact analysis

  • Adjust tile reservoir depth to optimize evaporation patterns

  • Release a full project whitepaper comparing pilot data with control zones

  • Open the system for architect and municipal site visits

  • Begin planning a second pilot with educational or public building partners

✅ Why This Pilot Matters

  • Proof of performance under real-world conditions

  • Data-driven results to support investment and deployment

  • Scalable and replicable model for cities and developers

  • Blueprint for policy alignment, offering measurable climate benefits

Our pilot proves that a lightweight, recycled PET-based evaporative roof can deliver meaningful cooling and water restoration;  all without heavy infrastructure or high maintenance.
